Power Girl - DC Universe
Why I chose to make this costume:
Kara is absolutely one of my favorite Comic book characters, period! She is a cool, tough, confident character who doesn't hold punches, has flaws and shortcomings but pushes through every situation despite them. Her classic costume is actually very well designed for the 70's, and I actually think it's empowering for a character such as Power Girl to have a sexy costume! Some characters, who are more delicate and sweet, could be victimnized in a costume like this, but Kara's tomboy-ish personality makes her empowered in this design. You can stare at her assets all day long, but disrespect her for a second and she will punch you through a wall! As a woman, I am all about embracing femininity but still being empowered, and that's partially why I love Kara so much.
How I made this costume:
I based my costume on the Kotobukiya Bishoujo statue, which stays true to the classic costume design, with a little different belt buckle, and a very highcut leotard LOL. To me, the simpler/revealing a costume design, the more attention you need to pay to the quality of each piece, the fit and the material choices. I really wanted to do Power Girl justice and make a costume that looks authentic and high end. My costume features:
- custom pattern drafted bodysuit (sleeves follow design seams into front/side/back of bodysuit)
- gold metal rope & medallion
- custom drafted seamless cape, serged & hemmed
- metal powder cast custom made belt buckle & made-from-scratch belt
- custom dyed & altered leather boots/gloves
- self-styled wig
- Boob Window content courtesy of Victoria's Secret Bombshell bra. Ladies - go out and buy one, you will thank me ♥
Thoughts on this costume:
Everytime I post a photo of this costume or wear it to the con, it's a scandal, LOL! That's ok with me, because Kara has always been a controvercial character with a lot of buzz around her from comic book fans, so if people can't handle my boob window, then I'd say I stayed authentic to the character. Also, don't worry, I'm wearing thick Danskin dancetights under the leotard so even though it is very high cut (I KNOW!), I am very well covered.
